TYPES OF DISABILITY INSURANCE
There are three types of disabilities:
1) Presumptive disability
This would apply if you lost your hearing, or lost the use of any two limbs (like both legs or arms or an arm or a leg), or if you became blind. There is no waiting period if you have one of these losses.
2) Residual disability
Think of this as a partial disability. You can only work, let's say, 20 hours a week instead of the 40-plus hours you normally do.
(You must make sure you have this clause in your insurance policy!)
3) Total disability
You are unable to perform your duties in which you are engaged at the time of disability. If you are a physician or dentist, special medical language is used in the definition of total disability (own–occupation).
