Disability Insurance - get covered now,
before you need it.
Why do people buy disability insurance?
You need disability insurance if you:
- are self employed
- require income protection in case you can't work due to a disability (e.g. dentists). You need an "own occupation" rider
- receive most of your income from bonuses - which are not covered by your company's disability policy
- recently changed jobs - and your new company does not have disability insurance
- are the only source of income for your family
- only have short term coverage
How much will disability insurance cost me?
The price will be according to the elimination period, benefit period, age, occupational class, and benefit amount. Generally you may expect to pay between one to two per cent of your annual income for a good disability insurance plan.
Let's pretend you were offered two identical jobs; one paid you $80,000 a year while you worked, but zero if you were ever sick or hurt. One paid you $78,000 a year, and 66 per cent of your income on a tax-free basis if you were ever sick or hurt until you reached the age of 65 - even if were sick or hurt several times during this period. Which jop would you take?.
I show little income (taxable) but I have a large mortgage - can I get disability insurance to cover my mortgage?
Yes! There is a non-profit company that can cover your mortgage for up to 25 years!
Ask yourself this: "When was the last time I took a 12 month vacation?" If the answer is never, than you need disability insurance coverage. If you knew that the odds of a disability lasting 12 months or longer was only 8 per cent, would you take a chance? If some told you that you could get a 8 per cent rate of return over a life time for your investments but have a 8 per cent chance of losing everything you saved for the last ten years would you buy it? A good disability policy may cost 2 per cent of your gross income to protect your lifestyle, even it you took a 12 month "vacation" from work.
